A. Forensic Medicon 2026 ( 47th Annual National Conference of the Indian Academy of Forensic Medicine IAFM)
a) Introduction
- “The Indian Academy of Forensic Medicine” was founded on 12th May 1972 and registered under Societies Registration Act 1860 at Panaji (Goa). The Registered office i.e., the headquarters of the Association shall be located in the dwelling city of General Secretary of Academy.
- The 47th Annual National Conference of the Indian Academy of Forensic Medicine (IAFM)—Forensic Medicon 2026—is set to be hosted by NEIGRIHMS, Shillong, with preconference workshop on 26 and Conference from February 27 to March 1, 2026. This prestigious event will bring together leading forensic medicine experts, academicians, researchers, and medico-legal professionals from across India and beyond, fostering discussions on emerging trends, innovations, and challenges in forensic medicine practices.
- With a focus on “Bridging tradition and technology in forensic medicine practice for the cause of justice”, the conference will explore a wide-range of topics such as medical law and ethics, forensic thanatology, forensic traumatology, clinical and integrated forensic medicine, forensic identification, forensic toxicology, forensic laboratory, recent advances and future in/ of forensic medicine in India.
- The scientific sessions will include plenary sessions, panel discussions, keynote addresses, debates, workshops, and paper presentations by various national and international speakers. Forensic Medicon 2026 also promises an engaging social and cultural experience, allowing delegates to explore the breath-taking beauty and heritage of Shillong and North East India.

B. NEIGRIHMS, Shillong
- Established in 1987, North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) is an Autonomous Institute under Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, catering MBBS, MD/MS, DM, BSc and MSc Nursing courses of medical education.

C. Department of Forensic Medicine, NEIGRIHMS
- The Department of Forensic Medicine, NEIGRIHMS started in the year 2009. Academic activities for the first batch of MBBS students started in 2010. Medicolegal works started in 2012. The department obtained permission from the state authorities to conduct medico-legal autopsy in the year 2016. All the faculty post including the Professor was filled up in 2017. Postgraduate MD course in Forensic Medicine started in 2019, with 3 PGs admission per year. Laboratory services with Histopathology, Forensic biology &Toxicology started in 2020. NEIGRIHMS is the second institute in India to start Virtual autopsy in 2022.The department is committed to pursuing other long-term goals which would benefit patients, society, and the community as a whole. The department is also having the facility for training in Virtual autopsy.

D. Shillong, Meghalaya
- Shillong is a hill station and the capital of Meghalaya. The name Shillong is derived from ‘ULei Shyllong’, a powerful deity and is situated at an altitude of 1,491m above sea level. The city lies in the centre of a plateau and is surrounded by hills. This beautiful city is about 103 kms from Guwahati. The presence of many well reputed educational institutions, many of them established by various missionary groups make Shillong the hub of education for the entire northeast. Meghalaya is also famous for heavy rainfall, caves, tallest waterfalls, beautiful landscapes and amazing people and their culture.
